Sunny Fields Retirement Village

This was my final year project, combining my knowledge of residential and commercial secotrs.  I decided to design a retirment village in the south east to increase supply of senior living accommodation for the ever growing demand.  The idea behind this project was to provide various options of senior living accomodation promoting more independant living amoung seniors.

The site was chosen due to its vast open space to accommodate all the required areas meeting the needs of the building users. The site was also chosen due to the amenties nearby and ease of access to public transport.

The key objectives identified from the breif assembled on behalf of the client were to create independent and supported living accommodation for seniors, providing a secure community to promote independent living with support available if required. Also to build high quality accommodation to create a welcoming, homely and safe environment for residents and guests.

The aim was to provide varying levels of supported housing for seniors as well as an area with a focus on dementia care. The development was to include:

  • A village centre, containing: 40 memory care rooms and communal areas with specialist care available for residents with varying stages of dementia, 87 Apartments for a semi-independent living option, communal facilities, and garden space for all residents, and 13 rooms allocated for staff overnight stays.

  • 60+ bungalows providing an independent living option within a safe community with the assurance of assistance on site if required. A range of 1-2 bed bungalows have been proposed to accommodate down sizers and allows the option for residents to share accommodation with a friend.

Throughout the concept stage various forms were explored based around the clients existing portfolio and the local residential properties. Key deisgn features that were replicated into the final design included gable walls, windows in sets of threes and multi-material facades. Technical details and fire plans were also produced for the development.

Below are some of the designs produced for this development proposal.
